Euphoria Fall Gathering 2015 is over, and it seemed to go off without a hitch. This was my first east coast event, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The ladies at Euphoria took great care of me, and truly gave me one of the best gathering experiences I’ve had.
It’s interesting going to a new region or city for a gathering. I had met almost nobody before, which is the best part of these things. We know all these personas from facebook, but when we go to gatherings, it all comes to life. It was great to meet so many of the east coast trickers, and experience the culture there. Not only do they trick differently than other places I’ve been, but many seem to live their lives differently. I met so many dedicated, hardworking young people, both in life and in tricks at this gathering. I got a glimpse at the mindset behind the trickers of that region, and what they like to focus on, or what they find important. My conversations with Tricia Guarin and Melissa Basch gave a deeper insight as well. Not to say that they speak for everyone, I just heard similar echoes from others throughout the weekend. As I’ve mentioned before, it’s these cultural lessons that I love most about these events. Tricking brings people together, and they can talk, and exchange ideas, and exchange laughs and love, and it allows us to connect in a way that no other sport can, I think. What we do is so rare, and so unknown to the rest of the world that I feel truly honored to be given the chance to witness it, and to participate in it, in some small way.
The standouts, for me:
Nick Fry: I know.. I gushed after Sun City, and I’ll do it again here. This kid is so good, it’s scary.
Will Coneys: Easily one of the most technically proficient trickers in the game, and creative as hell. I love watching Will trick, and in person, it’s truly a site to see. I didn’t know what to expect of his personality, but I was happy to learn he’s a fun guy, and he’s always laughing and joking around. That’s what you want at a gathering, and it’s nice to see it in a person that so many people look up to.
Brendan Morrison and David Fisher: Anything I could say about one, I could say about the other. Beautiful tricks, incredible power and precision, and a lot of great ideas about combos and tricking. I thought both of these guys were really nice and approachable, and it was a pleasure to be around them.
Shai DeBroux: Shai’s tricks look exactly like who she is. They’re beautiful, and powerful, and there’s an attention to detail there. I listened to her speak at the beginning of her seminar, and was impressed by how well spoken and insightful she is about tricking.
G-space (Grady Bergin): Shoutout to Grady for playing his set. I love having community members share their passions and skills with us. It feels more ours when one of our own brings more of themselves to a gathering.
The Euphoria Ladies: Thank you so much for everything you did to make this event what it was. You are all warm, inviting, hard working young ladies, and I know you’ll all go far in life. Keep being who you are.
